MANUAL VERSION 11.0 May 2008
Settings
7. SETTINGS
7.1 There are five parameters that must be set correctly on each end of an RS232 connec-
tion in order for the connection to be successful:
1. Both devices must communicate at the same bit rate (e.g., bits per second).
2. Both devices must use the same number of data bits per character.
3. Both devices must use the same type of parity (for error checking).
4. Both devices must use the same number of stop bits.
5. Both devices must use the same type of flow control.
7.2 The system serial port end of the RS232 connection configures most of these settings as
follows:
1. The bit rate, specified in bits per second (bps), can be configured and the allowed range
of bit rates depends on a number of factors. (Examples of allowed bit rates include
1200, 2400, 4000, 9600, etc.)
2. System serial ports always uses 8 data bits per character (this is fixed and cannot be
changed).
3. System serial ports always uses NO parity for error checking (this is fixed and cannot
be changed).
4. System serial ports always uses 1 stop bit (this is fixed and cannot be changed).
5. System serial ports can be configured for the following types of flow control:
No flow control
Software flow control only (XON/XOFF)
Hardware flow control only (RTS/CTS)
Both hardware and software flow control
7.3 The PC serial communications (COM) port end of the RS232 connection must have the
exact same settings (properties) as system serial ports, including:
bits per second (e.g., 4800, 2400, 1200, etc.)
8 data bits
no parity
1 stop bit
same flow control
NOTE: If you plan on connecting the system serial ports to anything other than a PC serial
port (e.g., to a serial printer), you will need to refer to the documentation provided with the
device and set its RS232 serial port correctly.
