A. TROUBLESHOOTING THE RS-232 PORTS
8.3 This section describes how to troubleshoot the CPC if your PC cannot communicate
with the CPC using RS-232. Because each CPC has two RS-232 ports, perform these proce-
dures on each RS-232 port.
8.4 To troubleshoot the RS-232 ports:
1. Make sure the CPC is powered OFF.
2. Launch a PC terminal emulation program, such as Hyperterm, Procomm, or Teraterm,
and configure the COM port settings as follows:
Bit Rate: 9600
Data Bits: 8
Stop Bit: 1
Parity: None
Flow Control: None
3. Connect a serial cable from the COM port to the CPC RS-232 port that has Message
Print enabled.
4. Power ON the CPC and watch the terminal emulation screen.
5. If you do not see any boot messages, connect the PC to a known good serial port on a
different CPC, an Internet Protocol Resource Card (IPRC), or a T1 card and look for
online responses. To verify transmit and receive messages, enter /olm when the card
has completely booted. One of the following should happen:
If the card responds with a command prompt or menu, your PC serial port is work-
ing properly. Turn OFF the power to the CPC and reconnect the RS-232 cable to
the CPC. Power ON the CPC and verify that no boot messages are present. If there
are still no boot messages, there may be a problem with the CPC port. Return the
card to Inter-Tel.
If the card does not respond or if you do not see any boot messages, check the set-
tings for your PC serial port. If they are correct, your PC serial port is not func-
tioning properly.
