Network Installation Considerations
INSTALLATION

3. NETWORK INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS
3.1 To install a network, you need the following:
• Software License: As of version 8.0, premium features, including networking, are con-
trolled by a software license. The license uploaded to the system must have the appro-
priate networking feature.
NOTE: If installing a version 7.0 or earlier system, every node in the network must
have the special networking PAL installed. Versions 7.0 and earlier have PALs in sev-
eral unit values that support networking.
• T1 or E1 Service: For each network span, order a clear channel, point-to-point T1 or
E1/PRI span from the service provider (not PRI service, even though you are using T1,
E1/PRI, or T1/E1/PRI cards).
• T1/PRI, E1/PRI, or T1/E1/PRI Cards: Each network span requires two T1/PRI, E1/
PRI, or T1/E1/PRI cards, one for each end of the span. The cards require the most
recent firmware. Use upgrade kit part number 828.1521 (T1C) or 828.1522 (E1C) that
contains required software components.
• CPCs or CPU Cards: If you use the newer CPU cards, you do not need to use upgrade
kits. The new CPUs include the EAC connector and extended memory. Call Processing
Cards (CPCs) do not require an upgrade as well. (See REPLACEMENT PARTS for
part numbers.)
3.2 If desired, you can create a private network using the networking Internet Protocol
Resource Card (IPRC). This card allows private networking over an IP network and is a lower-
cost solution than the IP Networking Module (3200N). If using the IPRC, the T1 or E1 service
and cards are not required.
3.3 Installation recommendations include the following:
• Each node must have at least one central office [local exchange in Europe] trunk. Emer-
gency calls must be programmed to use the local trunk.
• All nodes should have access to the node where the Voice Processing Unit is located,
with a minimum number of hops through other nodes. This has a significant impact on
the network layout.
NOTE: If using version 6.0 or later in a networked system, all other nodes must be running ver-
sion 5.2F9 (or later) or 5.349 (or later).
3.4 The network does not allow one node to use another node’s resources (DSP resources,
serial ports, etc.) with the exception of external page ports, SMDR output ports, and message
print output ports.
