SMDR/Error Message Output Device Installation
INSTALLATION
3
17. SMDR/ERROR MESSAGE OUTPUT DEVICE INSTALLATION
17.1 The output device(s) for the station message detail recording (SMDR) and error mes-
sage recording features must meet the requirements and match the RS232 pinouts described in
SPECIFICATIONS on page 2-100. The cables for the device(s) must not be longer than 50 feet
(15 meters).
17.2 To connect an RS232 output device to the CPC, CPU card, Options Card(s), or PC Data
Port Modules:
1. Match the bit rates on the output device and the RS232 port to which it is attached. See
page 2-100 for the proper bit rate settings.
2. Turn ON the AC POWER to both the device and the system before connecting the
interface cable to the circuit card or PCDPM. This prevents any electrical surges from
being transmitted by the interface.
3. Carefully connect the interface cable from the device to the appropriate connector on
the CPC, CPU128 card, CPU020/PCM card, Options Card, or PCDPM.
4. If necessary, using standard electrical tape, tape two ferrite split beads around the inter-
face cable just below where the cable connects to the circuit card or PCDPM. (See Fig-
ure 3-8 on page 3-26 for an example of ferrite bead installation).
NOTE: Ferrite beads may be necessary to help reduce electromagnetic interference
(EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI). The part number for a single split bead is
808.1195.
5. To set the parameters for the SMDR and error message outputs, see PROGRAMMING.
18. EXTERNAL MUSIC SOURCE INSTALLATION
18.1 If desired, external music sources may be connected to the system for background
music and music-on-hold. The music jacks on the CPC, CPU cards, and Options Cards are the
inputs for the optional external music sources (radio, tape player, etc.). The music source con-
nected to the primary CPU can be used for music-on-hold and/or background music. However,
the music sources connected to the secondary CPUs and Options Cards can only be used for
music-on-hold.
18.2 The music sources on the OPC cards are intended to be used on a per trunk group basis
so the end user can provide different recordings based on the trunk group.
18.3 For the music-on-hold feature, music, silence, ringback, or tick tones can be assigned
on a station-by-station basis. For more information, see PROGRAMMING, page 6-198.
NOTE: There are often broadcast restrictions associated with copyrighted music. Check with
the music’s original distributor and/or the broadcast source for restrictions and usage concern-
ing background music and music-on-hold. Inter-Tel is not responsible for any illegal or improper
use of copyrighted music connected to the system. With European systems, contact PPL (Pho-
nographic Performance Ltd.) for licenses.
18.4 If using a radio as a music source, place it 5 to 10 feet (1.5 to 3 meters) away from the
equipment chassis to avoid RFI generated by the chassis. If the radio is placed more than 10
feet (3 meters) away from the chassis, use twisted-pair cable. For better reception, a radio with
an external antenna is recommended.
