Trunk Features
10. TRUNK FEATURES
10.1 This section explains the trunk functions and programmable features. Trunk capacities
are explained in SPECIFICATIONS on page 2-4.
A. DUAL-TONE MULTI-FREQUENCY (DTMF) OR DIAL-PULSE SIGNALING
10.2 Trunks can be designated for DTMF or dial-pulse signaling through DB Programming
(see PROGRAMMING, page 6-254).
10.3 Phones and DTMF single-line sets can be used on either type of trunk. While on a dial-
pulse trunk, a station user can switch from dial-pulse to DTMF signals by pressing the pound
[hash] (#) or asterisk (*) buttons. After the pound [hash] or asterisk button is pressed, all digits
that follow during that call are sent out as DTMF tones. (This is useful when calling computer-
ized services that require a DTMF telephone, such as voice mail.)
B. TYPES OF TRUNKS AVAILABLE
10.4 The Inter-Tel system supports the following types of trunks:
Loop start trunks on the Loop Start Card (LSC) or Loop Start/Ground Start Card
(LGC): Loop start trunks support the Caller-ID feature. (See page 5-72 for details.)
Ground start trunks on Loop Start/Ground Start Card (LGC): Ground start trunks
on an LGC support incoming and outgoing calls. (See page 5-72 for details.)
T1 trunks on the T1 Card (T1C) or T1/E1 card (U.S. only): (See page 5-55 for more
T1 information.) The phone system supports the following types of T1 trunks:
Loop-start: Supports incoming and outgoing calls and Caller-ID.
Ground-start: Supports incoming and outgoing calls. T1 ground start trunks do
not support Caller ID [CLIP].
DID: Supports DID, ANI, and DNIS call routing. (See page 5-72 for details.)
Basic E&M: Supports DID, ANI, and DNIS call routing as well as basic network-
ing (such as ring in to DISA and connection of two systems). For E&M informa-
tion, see page 5-66. See page 5-72 for DID, ANI, and DNIS information.
OPX: A single-line set can be connected to the system via a T1C or T1/E1 card
connection.
Primary Rate T1 trunks on the T1/PRI or T1/E1/PRI card (U.S. only): (See page 5-
55 for more T1 information.) The phone system supports ISDN Primary Rate trunks on
up to eight T1 cards in the system.
CAUTION
While this system is designed to be reasonably secure against CO trunk misuse by outside
callers, there is no implied warranty that it is not vulnerable to unauthorized intrusions, toll
fraud, or unintended toll charges. If the central office [local exchange] does not provide
supervision, it does not disconnect the call when one party hangs up, making it possible for
a caller to remain connected to a CO trunk circuit. If this happens, and the outside caller
remains connected, toll charges could continue to accrue until the outside caller hangs up.
Or, if this happens, and the outside caller begins dialing, the call could be placed through the
phone system and would then be billed to the system’s owner. The system cannot check
this type of call for toll restriction and may not register the call in SMDR. This problem could
arise when a call is connected to a station or when a call is in an unsupervised conference.
