Grounding Requirements
9.8 With a U.S. system, the equipment chassis must be plugged into a properly grounded
AC power source. (See page 3-10 for additional AC power requirements.) Some good ground
points include the building’s frame, a ground rod (driven a minimum of 8 ft), and a copper (not
PVC) cold water pipe.
9.9 With a European system, the equipment chassis must be plugged into a properly
grounded AC power source. (See page 3-10 for additional AC power requirements.) The cabi-
net and Krone field should also be hardwire earthed to the building earth.
9.10 In addition, all optional Single-Line Adapters, trunk gas discharge tubes, and UPS/SPS
battery compartments that are used must be properly grounded to the chassis AC outlet. Inter-
Tel’s CommSource division or Inter-Tel Europe sells a surge/spike protector that has a built-in
ground lug just for this purpose.
9.11 The grounding wire should be 10AWG (10 gauge thickness or larger -- smaller number
gauge = larger thickness) or larger and should not exceed 25 feet (7.5 meters) to help provide
RFI/EMI protection, or it should not exceed 10 feet (3 meters) to help provide both RFI/EMI
and lightning protection.
