Assembling the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) Backboard
7. ASSEMBLING THE MAIN DISTRIBUTION FRAME (MDF) BACKBOARD
7.1 The MDF is the point at which the station instruments, trunks, and auxiliary system
equipment are connected to terminal blocks [Krone blocks in Europe] (or, in the case of T1/E1
or PRI trunks, modular jack/line jack unit assemblies are used instead). These terminal blocks
[Krone blocks] are then connected to the circuit cards in the Inter-Tel equipment chassis. It is
extremely important that the connections be made carefully and accurately.
7.2 With a European system each card is normally supplied with 2 meter cable (4 meter
cables are available by special order). These cables are supplied with the appropriate number
of Krone blocks for the card type.
NOTE: To simplify the MDF installation instructions, this manual outlines basic one block-to-
one card installation using bridging clips. However, it is quite acceptable, and in some situations
more functional, to use additional blocks and then cross connect between them.
7.3 Assemble the MDF as follows:
1. If desired, mount at least a 4 × 6-foot (1.2 × 1.8-meter), ¾-inch (2 cm) plywood back-
board at the MDF location. (Depending on the number of stations and trunks to be
installed, a larger backboard may be necessary.)
2. With a U.S. system, attach the 66M1-50-type terminal blocks to the plywood back-
board. With a European system, Attach the Krone blocks to the plywood backboard.
See Figure 3-6 on page 3-23 for a sample MDF block layout and cable assignments
with a U.S. system. Blocks include:
• Up to 28 blocks for connecting CO trunks and the 25-pair cables for the Loop/
Ground Start Cards (LGCs) and/or Loop Start Cards (LSCs).
• Up to 28 blocks for connecting station cables and the 25-pair cables for the station
cards – Digital Keyset Cards (DKSCs) and/or 16-Port Digital Keyset Cards
(DKSC-16s) for digital phones and SLAs, Analog Keyset Cards (AKSCs) for ana-
log phones, Executone Keyset Cards (EKSCs) for Executone IDS and Wave
phones, and Single-Line Cards (SLCs) and/or 16-Port Single-Line Cards (SLC-
16s) for single-line sets and playback devices.
NOTE: If three-pair cable is used, extra terminal blocks and the use of cross-con-
nect wiring techniques are required.
3.
If installing any T1/E1 and/or PRI trunks, attach eight-conductor modular jack (line
jack unit) assemblies to the MDF as required. (For complete information on installing
T1/PRI or E1/PRI trunks, see page 3-31.)
4. If installing any BRI trunks (BRSs or BRUs), attach 50-pin Amp connectors to the MDF.
5. If installing any single-line devices or DID [DDI in Europe] trunks, attach the neces-
sary SLAs and corresponding modular jack (line jack unit) assemblies to the plywood
backboard. See Figure 3-12 on page 3-30 and Figure 3-27 on page 3-53 for complete
diagrams of the SLA setup.
a. Changing the port type: SLAs are shipped with both ports set for single-line
device operation. If connecting a DID [DDI] trunk:
1.) Remove the cover and set the
corresponding port for DID
[DDI] operation.
