Basic Rate Interface (BRI) Cards (BRSs/BRUs)
SPECIFICATIONS
2
J. BASIC RATE INTERFACE (BRI) CARDS (BRSS/BRUS)
NOTE: BRU cards are not supported in Europe.
4.204 The Inter-Tel system includes Basic Rate S/T Interface (BRS) and Basic Rate U Inter-
face (BRU) cards to support ISDN Basic Rate Interface. These cards enable the system to con-
nect to video, voice, and data devices such as video conference units, ISDN modems, LAN
bridges, and ISDN telephones. The cards provide a cost-effective alternative to PRI for small
systems requiring ISDN services. However, BRI cannot be used for networking two different
systems.
NOTE: The Inter-tel Private Networking feature is not an option when using the BRI card. To
use the Private Networking feature with the Inter-Tel systems, the PRI card must be used.
ALSO: The U.S. software does not automatically upload the BRI software to the BRS and BRU
cards as it does with T1 or E1/PRI Cards. To ensure that the most current version of BRI soft-
ware is loaded, the BRS/BRU software should be manually uploaded at the time of installation.
The U.K. version software automatically uploads the BRI software to the BRS card.
4.205 BRS and BRU cards support:
BRI stations that connect to data/video devices behind the PBX via BRS card with an S
interface and a BRU card with a U interface.
BRI trunks that connect to the network via BRS cards with an NT1 device.
Data/video switching from behind the PBX out any U interface trunk (e.g., PRI trunk
and BRI trunk) to the public network.
4.206 BRI stations operate like other stations with the following exceptions:
BRI station ports do not support passive bus configuration (one ISDN device per BRS
port).
A BRI station cannot perform features while connected on a call that require a hook-
switch or SPCL button, including Individual Hold, System Hold, Transfer, Record-A-
Call, and Conference.
The BRI station cannot have a mailbox, but can have an extension ID.
A message cannot be left for a BRI station.
Centrex options are not supported behind the BRS or BRU card.
Caller ID [CLIP] information does not include the callers name (i.e., only the callers
number is available).
4.207 A BRI station cannot place a call on both B-channel stations with a single setup mes-
sage. The bonding must be performed outside the D-channel signaling. In other words, a video
conference unit or data device must place two separate calls and perform the bonding at the
external device level. The routing user information provided on the D-channel at this time is
call setup and call termination messages only.
4.208 A system with 64 or 128 devices is limited to two BRI cards (BRS, BRU, or a combina-
tion), while systems with CPU020-D or CPU020-Q cards may have eight cards installed in any
combination of BRS and BRU. The additional BRI cards do not increase the T1/PRI or E1/PRI
card capacities.
