Terminating the Cables at Station Locations
6.8 Because the phone system utilizes digital voice and data transmission between the digi-
tal phones and the chassis, there are some additional digital phone-only cabling requirements:
Do not use shielded cable, and do not use cable smaller than 24AWG (24 gauge thick-
ness or larger -- smaller number gauge = larger thickness).
Do not parallel cables (e.g., do not “double up on the copper”).
Do not “bridge” or “Y” off the cable to another location.
Unlike analog phones, the digital or Executone phones do not need to be routed in sepa-
rate multi-pair cable runs. For example, if using 25-pair cable runs to multiple station
locations, it is acceptable to include single-line sets, auxiliary equipment, and trunks in
a cable being used for phones.
B. TERMINATING THE CABLES AT STATION LOCATIONS
Digital Phones, Single-Line Sets, and Executone Phones
NOTE: Executone phones are not supported in Europe.
6.9 Terminate the digital phone, single-line set, Executone phone, and playback device sta-
tion cables on four-conductor modular jack [six-conductor line jack unit in Europe] assemblies
at the station locations. (For exceptions to this, see the NOTE following paragraph 6.6 on the
previous page.)
6.10 Do not mount the assemblies on the wall at this time; they are wall mounted later when
the station instruments are installed. See Figure 3-1 through Figure 3-5 on the following pages
for a wiring diagram.
Analog Phones
6.11 Terminate the analog phone station cables on six-conductor modular jack (line jack
unit) assemblies at the station locations.
6.12 Do not mount the assemblies on the wall at this time; they are wall mounted later when
the station instruments are installed. See Figures 3-3 and 3-4 for a wiring diagram.
CAUTION
If tip and ring are reversed when installing a phone, the phone does not function.
CAUTION
If the power pair (W/BL, BL/W) is reversed, installing a phone opens the associated ther-
mistor on the Analog Keyset Card.
