MANUAL VERSION 11.0 May 2008
Connecting Optional Off-Premises Extensions (OPX)
INSTALLATION
3
F. CONNECTING OPTIONAL OFF-PREMISES EXTENSIONS (OPX)
7.48 Off-premises extensions are remote single-line DTMF sets that are connected to the
Inter-Tel system through telephone company [network provider] OPX circuits (or customer-
provided circuits). The circuits are connected to Single-Line Adapter (SLA) circuits, which are
connected to available Digital Keyset Card (DKSC) and/or 16-Port Digital Keyset Card
(DKSC-16) circuits, or to T1/E1 circuits, which are connected to T1, E1, T1/PRI, or E1/PRI
Card circuits.
NOTE: SLAs do not support visual message waiting applications. If single-line sets with mes-
sage waiting lamps are installed on SLAs, the lamps do not function. However, single-line sets
can be configured in DB Programming to receive audible message waiting indication tones.
7.49 Off-premises station instruments must be AC ringer-equipped. The SLAs onboard
high-voltage ringing adapter (HVRA) provides isolation from the telephone company [network
provider] OPX circuits as required by FCC regulations.
7.50 Each SLA can support up to two off-premises extensions. (On premises, SLA circuits
can be used for installing AC-ringing single-line sets, playback devices, etc.)
7.51 In certain off-premises applications, voice volume levels may not be acceptable. This
degradation in voice volume is due to the natural voice frequency range limitations of the tele-
phone company [network provider] or customer-provided circuit. To increase the voice fre-
quency range, installation of a two-wire, negative impedance repeater unit is recommended.
(See page 2-86 for specifications.)
7.52 The repeater unit is installed at the MDF between the SLA and the cabling to the off-
premises, single-line station. For proper installation with the Inter-Tel system, the following
are connected to the appropriate “pins” on the repeater unit (see the manufacturer’s instructions
for proper pin locations): -Battery (-24 to -56VDC), Ground, System Tip, System Ring, OPX
Tip, and OPX Ring. Information on operating and adjusting the repeater unit is included with
the product.
7.53 Install the off-premises extensions as follows (see Figure 3-27 on page 3-53):
1. At the MDF, terminate each telephone company [network provider] OPX circuit (or
customer-provided circuit) on the desired SLA circuit.
2. At the off-premises location, terminate each telephone company OPX circuit (or cus-
tomer-provided circuit) on the appropriate single-line set modular jack (line jack unit)
assembly.
