6. Double-click the IP Softphone that you have just created. The device-specific fields are
displayed. Program the following fields as described in this manual or use online help.
3.146 Consider the following considerations when programming a Model 8602 IP softphone:
• The use of a password is highly recommended for all Model 8602 configurations to pre-
vent unauthorized users from accessing the system using a valid Model 8602 device ID.
• The Model 8602 only supports American and British English. Other languages are cur-
rently not supported.
• The Model 8602 must not be configured in peer-to-peer network groups because of its
mobility. If the Model 8602 connects to the system outside of the normal network, then
peer-to-peer calls will fail.
• The use of RFC-2833 DTMF is recommended. The DTMF encoding will follow the
endpoint’s speech encoding unless the DTMF encoding is set to RFC-2833. When the
Model 8602 is configured to use G.729 speech encoding then G.729 DTMF will be
used, and when the Model 8602 is configured to use G.711 speech encoding then G.711
DTMF will be used. However, if RFC-2833 DTMF encoding is used, then the endpoint
will no longer “automatically” follow the speech encoding setting. The use of G.729
DTMF encodings will negatively impact the transmission of DTMF tones from the
Model 8602 and will cause issues when trying to use Interactive Voice Response (IVR)
type systems. As such, the use of RFC-2833 DTMF is recommended.
• The Model 8602 only supports three G.-711 or six G-729 frames per packet. The Model
8602 will default to these values if the frames per packet setting is set any higher. The
Audio Frame/IP Packet setting can be programmed in System\IP-Related Informa-
tion\Call Configuration.
