5.58 The Internet Protocol (IP) PhonePlus, Model 8660, IP SoftPhone, multi-protocol end-
points, Model 8602 IP softphone, and IP Single-Line Adapter (SLA) provide the functionality
that allows you to make phone calls through the IP network to the IP Card (IPC) or IP
Resource Card (IPRC) on the telephone system.
5.59 Most IP endpoints resemble existing endpoints that use the TDM highway. For exam-
ple, the Axxess IP PhonePlus looks like an Executive Display Phone, Models 8660 and 8662
look like the Model 8560, the Model 8620 looks like the Model 8520, etc. The Model 8690,
however, is a special display phone that uses Windows CE as the interface. The IP devices
operate the same as their counterparts installed directly on the system, except for the following:
• They cannot use a PCDPM or MDPM.
• They do not support Desktop OAI applications.
• They do not support the “enhanced speakerphone mode” feature.
5.60 The IP SLA operates like a standard Inter-Tel single-line set.
5.61 For more information about the IPC, IPRC, and IP devices, refer to the IP Devices
Installation Manual (version 1.3 or later).
K. MULTI-PROTOCOL ENDPOINTS
5.62 System software versions 8.1 and later support multi-protocol endpoints. These end-
points support either Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) or Inter-Tel Protocol (ITP). Endpoints
that can operate in either mode include the following:
• Models 8600, 8620/8622, and 8662: Look and operate like Models 8500, 8520, and
8560, respectively. New Models 8622 and 8662 endpoints are now available. They are
Class 2 Power over Ethernet (PoE) devices. The new endpoints replace the existing
endpoints. Table 2-16 shows the existing and new part numbers.
• Model 8690: Has a touch screen that displays feature, dialpad, and menu buttons.
CAUTION
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ADMINISTRATORS FOR EMERGENCY (911/999) CALLS:
Unless programmed for emergency outgoing access using a local loop (see the latest ver-
sion of the IP Devices Installation Manual, document part no. 835.2195, for details), when
an IP endpoint such as the model 8602 IP softphone, dials the emergency number, this
includes 911 (default for U.S. systems), 999 (default for European systems), or the appropri-
ate emergency dial sequence for the locality, from a remote location, the call is placed from
where the phone system is physically located. Because these emergency services use
Caller ID [CLIP] to help locate the caller, emergency service could be misdirected or
delayed. Also, the emergency service contacted may be local to the phone system, but not
to the IP device. All IP device users should be alerted to this situation and instructed to use
a local telephone line for placing emergency calls. Also note that the IP device may not func-
tion in the event of a power or network failure at either the local site or the phone system
location unless operational backup power provisions have been implemented by the install-
ing company.
