MANUAL VERSION 11.0 – May 2008
Basic Rate Interface Terminology
FEATURES
5
U Interface (User Interface): A connection coming into the system from an external
transmission system (ISDN provider), which is typically a Central Office [local
exchange]. (BRI U interface is a two-wire connection and PRI U interface is a four-wire
connection.) All BRI ISDN devices with a U interface normally have an NT1 built-in to
interface directly to the Network (ISDN provider or Central Office/Local Exchange).
T Interface (Trunk Interface): A four-wire connection between the NT1 that termi-
nates the transmission coming from the Central Office [local exchange] and the NT2
that connects to the user’s TE. This interface is located at the customer site.
S Interface (Station Interface): A four-wire connection between the NT2 and the
users TE. This interface is located at the customer site.
S/T Interface (Station/Trunk Interface): Because the BRI Station card (BRS) can be
programmed for either a station port (S) or a trunk port (T) the interface, it is referred to
as the S/T Interface.
10.56 The following programming is required to use the BRI feature:
1. Make sure the Advanced CO Interface premium feature is licensed. If this feature is not
enabled, the warning message “Online Ignored for Board - Check Advanced CO Inter-
faces” appears in Message Print when the card is installed. (see page 6-97 in PRO-
GRAMMING). If this occurs, upload a software license that supports this premium
feature.
2. Choose a slot and equip it for either a BRS or BRU card using System\Cabinets in DB
Programming. (see page 6-136 in PROGRAMMING)
3. In DB Programming, equip the ports to be either station or trunk ports. Leave unused
ports set to
None.
4. Program the PRI or BRU ports for either BRI station or BRI trunks depending on the
device being installed.
5. Program the established BRI station and trunk ports.
6. Program the individual BRI devices.
NOTE: Refer to the manufacturer’s manual for the external device being installed.
7.
Program the reference clock information for each of the BRI trunk ports in System\Cab-
inets\Reference Clock List.
8. Install the BRS cards in the selected slot in the equipment chassis, and connect the
external power supply, if required. Also connect the 50-pin Amp connection to the front
of the card and terminate the cable to the MDF (Main Distribution Frame). (see page 3-
131 in INSTALLATION)
9. Install the BRU card in the selected slot in the equipment chassis, and connect the 50-
pin Amp connection to the front of the card, and then terminate the cable to the MDF.
10. Connect the individual BRI devices to the chosen ports.
NOTE: If a BRS or BRU card is installed on a system using CPU 128 or CPU 64, a
Network Clock Card (NCC) must also be installed. If the system uses a CPC, however,
a NCC is not required.
