8.2.6 Eye diagram measurements
The eye diagram is a tool for evaluation of signal quality and shows the combined
effects of channel noise and intersymbol interference. It is a significant means of visu-
alizing jitter and allows you to analyze the reasons for it. By creating histograms of the
eye diagram, important jitter parameters can be determined.
The eye diagrams are a superposition of repetitively sampled waveforms, which have a
length of about 1 bit.
The waveform display style must be set to vectors: [DISPLAY] > "Signal Colors / Per-
sistence" tab > "Style = Vectors"
The following characteristic values can be determined:
Eye width 3σcrossing23σcrossing1
Tcrossing1 Tcrossing2
3σbase 3σtop
Eye
height
Eye top
Eye base
Vcrossing
Figure 8-8: Basic eye diagram characteristics
Eye top = Mean of the upper vertical histogram
σtop = Standard deviation of the upper vertical histogram
Eye base = Mean of the lower vertical histogram
σbase = Standard deviation of the lower vertical histogram
Tcrossing = First and second mean of the horizontal histogram
σcrossing = Standard deviation of the horizontal histogram
