16.5 Power path
The "Power Path" measurements are used for analyzing the behavior of the devices
that control the power flow through the switched-mode power supply (SMPS) circuit,
including switching devices and inductors.
16.5.1 Safe operating area (S.O.A.)
The safe operating area is defined by the voltage and current conditions over which a
power semiconductor device is expected to operate without self-damage. The "Safe
Operating Area" analysis provides a diagram of the safe operating conditions of your
device.
Required probes:
Differential voltage probe
Current probe
16.5.1.1 Safe operating area results
The results of " Safe Operating Area" measurements are provided in the following
ways:
The diagram shows the graphical presentation of:
the voltage waveform
the current waveform
A logarithmic or linear XY diagram of the calculated voltage (x-axis) and current (y-
axis) waveforms. This curve is a graphical representation of the power handling
capability of the device under various conditions.
The result box displays the numeric measurement results. Also, you can see the
mask definition and change the scale in the "SOA Control" dialog. If the state of
"Enable mask test" is "On" an extra result box appears, see also Table 16-3.
