About Loopback Versus VLAN Interfaces
LoopbackinterfacesaredifferentfromVLANroutinginterfacesbecausetheyallowyouto
disconnecttheoperationofroutingprotocolsfromnetworkhardwareoperation,improvingthe
reliabilityofIPconnections.Aloopbackinterfaceisalwaysreachable.TheIPaddressassignedto
theloopbackinterfaceisusedastherouterID,whichhelps
whenrunningprotocolslikeOSPF,
becauseOSPFcanberunningevenwhentheoutboundinterfaceisdown.IPpacketsroutedtothe
loopbackinterfacearereroutedbacktotherouteroraccessserverandprocessedlocally.

interface,dependingonyourchoiceofparameters,asshowninTable 16‐1.
