Configuring Policy-Based Routing
About Policy-Based Routing
Normally,IPpacketsareforwardedaccordingtotheroutethathasbeenselectedbytraditional
routingprotocols,suchasRIPandOSPF,orbystaticroutes.Inthiscase,selectionisperformed
basedonlyonthedestinationoftheIPpacket.Policy‐basedroutingaddsmoreflexibilityto
routingbyspecifying
otheralternativepaths.Whenaroutemaplistisconfiguredandappliedto
aninterface,policy‐basedroutingwillcheckanincomingIPpacketagainsttheaccesslist(ACL)of
eachmapofthatlistinsequence.IfnoACLpermitrulematchesthepacket,thepacketis
forwardedon
thenormalroutingpathusingaroutelookup.Ifapermitruledoesmatch,theACL
checkisexitedandthemaphavingtheACLmatchingthepacketischeckedforfurtherrouting
instruction.Iftheactionofthatmapispermit,andanexthopisspecified,policy‐basedrouting
willforwardthepackettothenexthopspecifiedinthatmap.Otherwiseitwillforwardthepacket
onthenormalroutingpathusingaroutelookup.Oneroutemaplistisallowedperrouting
interface.

Syntax
show route-map id-number
