Font Create Utility 18-2 Revision D
Flash Font is a preferable method for creating Machine
Fonts that can also be created in Font Create or Advanced
Font Create. Font conversion in Flash Font is quicker, and
the resulting Machine Font occupies less memory than one
created using Font Create or Advanced Font Create.
Be aware that when you type Machine Fonts created
using Font Create or Advanced Font Create, and Machine
Fonts created using Flash Font on the same screen, there
may be slight differences in attributes such as baseline
and Font Size. This is due to the different manners in
which the two fonts are converted. Font Create and
Advanced Font Create are especially valuable if you need
to convert a large number of Master Fonts at one time.
Font Create can also generate Machine Fonts that are
larger than the maximum allowed by Flash Font. See
Pub. No. 2A01984 for information on the Advanced Font
Create option.
Machine Fonts are created from copies of the 20 Master
Fonts which are installed in the system. The Master
Fonts are also stored on a floppy disk which is supplied
with the system. If you are either updating the software,
or need to recopy the Master Fonts to the system, refer to
§19.6 for information on copying SYSTEM directories to
the Hard Disk. Additional Master Fonts are available for
purchase on disk, or via modem via Fonts By Wire
(§4.7).
Each character (letter, number, symbol, etc.) that is part
of a Master Font set is simply an outline image. You do
not normally see the Master Font image on screen in
Message Compose. The Master Font characters are used
as templates for creating Machine Fonts. You can set
parameters such as Font Size, Edge Type, Edge Direction
and Edge Size. The Machine Font is created using a pro-
cess called conversion. After conversion, each Machine
Font can be loaded into any one of the sixteen Font posi-
tions (§6.6), and then used to create your messages.
