Disk Utilities 19-48 Revision D
A status report is generated automatically when Fix Files
is finished. All fragmented files in the list are processed.
This method is especially effective if numerous files have
recently been deleted from disk, thereby opening up
blocks large enough to contain the reassembled files.
Fragmented directories cannot be fixed using this func-
tion. Try moving the files out of the directory, deleting the
directory, creating a new directory, and replacing the files.
NOTE
Although Fix Files can usually repair
a file, it will not always succeed in
reducing disk allocation
requirements. If a single block of
sufficient size is not available for the
reassembled file, the file remains
fragmented.
The advantage of Fix Files over Pack Disk is that Fix
Files
is much faster. If Fix Files does not succeed in
repairing one or more files, try running
Pack Disk; also,
try deleting old, unused files from the disk using the
Delete function. Then, go back into Defragment and try
Fix Files again.
When finished using the Defragmentation functions:
• Press
CNTL Q or select Quit to return to the Disk
Utilities main menu.
• Press
MODE SLCT to exit from Disk Utilities.

of many files in multiple directories. System failure or
other problems may occur if old and new versions of cer-
tain files are used together on a system.
