iNFiNiT! Family Operation Manual
Revision D 19-47 Disk Utilities
Total Files: The first number here is the number of frag-
mented files, while the second is the total number of files
on the disk.
Total Directories: First number is number of frag-
mented directories, the second is total directories on the
disk. Directories cannot be repaired as files can; they
must be emptied and recreated.
Available Blocks: The total number of data blocks on
the disk. Files occupy one or more data blocks.
Largest Contiguous: The largest single group of free
data blocks on the disk.
Largest Contiguous/Available Blocks: This is the ratio
of the largest single block to total available blocks. If this
value is less than about 0.5, the Pack Disk operation
(described below) may help to free up disk space.
The value 1.0 is optimal.
Pack Disk: Press CNTL P or select Pack Disk. Use this
function first; as it is the best way to fix fragmented files.
Pack Disk attempts to squeeze all files and directories on
a disk toward the beginning of the disk.
All free blocks lying between the files and directories are
thus forced toward the end of the disk, opening up larger
contiguous blocks for unfragmented files to occupy.
NOTE
Neither Pack Disk nor Fix Files may
be executed by the Secondary User in
iNFiNiT! Dual User mode.
Packing a disk works well for most files, although large
files may fragment during packing.
Fix Files: Press CNTL F or select Fix Files. This func-
tion lifts the pieces of a fragmented file from the disk,
reassembles them back into one file, and places the reas-
sembled file back on the disk in an area large enough to
hold it as a single piece.
