The AAA Model
The AAA security model is an architectural framework for the implementation and management of common security
functions within a network of heterogeneous elements. The model distinguishes authentication (verification of a user’s
identity) from authorization (verification that a user’s actions are permissible) and offers accounting services with respect
to both. Moreover, the model separates security policy from policy enforcement, thereby enabling a distributed security
scheme with centralized policy management for each independent function.
The figure below provides a network-level illustration.
